The proof coin is also deep cameo - a distinctive cameo appearance created by the contrast of a finely detailed frosted foreground against a shimmering mirror-like background. The American Eagle program was born In 1986 when the US began striking gold and silver bullion coins to compete with world bullion coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf, the South African Krugerrand and others. The value of these coins was intended to be tied directly to their metal value, although in some cases (where mintages were low) a collector market has developed. Each coin is encapsulated in clear acrylic to preserve its beauty and condition and placed in a velvet lined museum box.
